Our Oxford

Our Oxford

Oxford is comprised of a rich variety of neighbourhoods, each facing their own unique challenges and opportunities. The individual groups that represent these areas are also available to discuss more localised issues directly: find out more below.

High street and city centre

One of the city centre’s main vehicle thoroughfares, tourist routes and historic streets lined with colleges and university buildings, the Oxford High Street Association represents the needs of this area in particular. Bus gates have been a key concern for many local businesses.

Jericho

Rated as one the best places in the UK to live by the Sunday Times in 2019, Jericho is home to an eclectic mix of independent shops, pubs and restaurants. Street access closures and parking charges are ongoing points of contention for local businesses and residents alike.

Cowley Road

Stretching for nearly two miles between The Plain and Temple Cowley, Cowley Road is home to an eclectic mixture of bars, restaurants, shops, nightclubs and places of worship. Numerous transport schemes for the area have been proposed, including bus gates, low traffic neighbourhoods and the mass removal of car parking spaces.

Botley road

This mile-long road is notable for its homeware stores, supermarkets and car rental companies. The wider area is also home to numerous independent traders. These include several food wholesalers, based around Osney Mead, who serve Oxford’s thriving hospitality sector.

Covered market

First opened in 1774, the Covered Market remains in commercial use today, home to a range of shops and cafes. Owned and managed by the City Council, the market often faces different challenges compared to other areas of the city, managed privately or by university colleges.

Summertown

Bounded by the Cherwell River to the east and the Oxford Canal to the west, Summertown is North Oxford’s main shopping centre - and home to the Oxford base of the BBC. It’s also an attractive residential area with a number of schools.

Headington

A thriving community to the east of Oxford, located on the main route to London. Businesses in Headington are especially supported by the staff and public attending the major hospitals, research centres and Brooke's University, all located in the area. These developments create a very transient population with housing and parking issues to the fore.

St Clements

Providing a link between Oxford city centre and its outer suburbs, St Clements is home to an eclectic mix of residential properties, pubs, restaurants, letting agents, and retailers.
